Q: Rollicking Rascal Nappies explained
Rollicking Rascal Nappies explained.
A:
THE ROLLICKING RASCAL ORIGINAL NAPPY.
This is a one-sized, all-in-one (AIO) nappy that has been designed to avoid wetness over the baby's hips and is quick to dry.
The outer shell is a waterproof layer of poyeurethane laminated fabric(PUL) and the inner layer is either microfleece or polarfleece.
There are 23 resin snaps on the outside front of the nappy which enables the nappy to be adapted to one of three sizes.
Inside the shell sit 2 contoured absorbent inserts and a liner for keeping the baby's bottom dry. This nappy is suitable for newborn to toddler(see approx weights below)
Some prefer to use prefolds on the newborn as some babies are very small and can get swamped in the nappy if below these weights.( The prefolds can then be used later as extra inserts) When ordering the RR Original Nappy you request the size insert required. SMALL = 3kg-6kg(6.6-13.2 lbs)
MEDIUM =5kg-10kg(11-22.04lbs)
LARGE =8kg-20kg(17.6-44.09lbs)
THE ROLLICKING RASCAL FITTED NAPPY. Is designed as a non-waterproof nappy which requires a waterproof cover. The shape is the same as the RR Original Nappy but it comes in three sizes. The medium and small sizes of the Fitted Nappy correspond to the sizes of the medium and small folds of the RR Original Nappy.
It has been designed in three sizes as it was too bulky to be a one -size nappy. When ordering the fitted nappy the corresponding size insert will be included:
SMALL = 3kg-6kg(6.6-13.2lbs)
MEDIUM =5kg-10kg(11-22.04lbs)
LARGE =8kg-20kg(17.6-44.09lbs) See Rollicking Rascal Nappies under products for examples of these nappies
Q: Washing Instructions ( nappies / woollens)
How do I wash my Nappies + Woollens. + HELP the nappy is leaking!!
A:
PLEASE WASH NAPPIES BEFORE USE
Dry Pailing Technique:
Remove any poo and flush it down the toilet (usually very easy with polar fleece liners). Place the dirty nappy into a nappy bin or bucket with lid. (No liquid in the bucket)After cleaning the bucket sprinkle some baking soda or a drop of essential oil in the bottom to freshen it or a Citrus Circle Disc can be useful with odour control -just pop one into your bucket and then add the soiled nappies into it. When ready to wash, place the nappies in the washing machine ( minus the citrus circle) Wash the nappies with hot water (55 degrees is hot enough) add ordinary detergent.(Some people put them through a rinse cycle first. )
If you soak your Rollicking Rascals nappies in nappy soaker products please be aware that they may fade slightly and may not last as long as if they were drypailed. IMPORTANT: Please do not wash Rollicking Rascals nappies with other items containing unprotected Velcro/touch tape/hook and loop as the soft thread used on the edges of the nappies may become damaged.(If using Rollicking Rascals nappies that have touch tape, please use laundry tab and fold right hand wing onto front flap before washing)
Please limit the use of vinegar ( some use this as an odour controlling method)in your rinse as it is known to break down PUL fabric with continued use. Do not use fabric softener in the wash as it will coat the nappies in oils, decreasing their absorbency. Do not dry clean. We strongly recommend you allow the covers and liners of your Rollicking Rascals nappies to air dry, rather than place them in a tumble drier. The inserts and cover dry extremely quickly, even in cold/damp climates. The inserts may be placed in a drier but a small amount of shrinkage will occur if placed on a high heat setting for extended periods. We recommend using a low heat setting on your drier. If you find you must use a drier for the covers, please use only the lowest heat setting on your drier.
CARE OF WOOLLEN COVERS.
To remove faeces from your woollen cover gently wash it with water and olive oil soap.(Don’t use commercial wool detergents as it will prevent lanolin from working when you attempt to lanolise your cover) To get a good coating of lanolin the process may have to be done several times before the garment is ready for wear.(A way to test if it’s done enough is to drop some water onto the cover and if it rolls off it has enough lanolin on it to use) Wool is the absorbent and the lanolin makes it water proof.
HOW TO WASH A WOOL COVER.
Olive oil soap can be used on covers using tepid water .If the water is too hot or too cold may shrink the wool and rubbing it vigorously may felt it.
TO LANOLISE:
Melt about 1cm of Lansinoh Lanolin in hot water then add ½ a capful of Eucalan Woolwash to the hot water mix,slosh it around to break up the clump of lanolin. Fill a container with tepid water (skin temperature) Submerge the wool cover into the mix and soak for 15-20 minutes. Turn the cover or longies inside out and soak for another 15 minutes.If you have blobs of lanolin on the garment it won’t matter and if it is really sticky that’s ok too.
OR
After washing item to be lanolised turn it inside out and put in a bowl or sink. Put about a cup full of reallly hot water into an airtight container (screw lid is safer) and add 1/2 teaspoon of Lansinoh Lanolin, shake until it is melted. Let the mixture cool and then add enough baby shampoo to it so that it turns white. This mixture can then be poured onto the area to be lanolised and left to soak in for 1/2 hour or so. Gently rinse item roll in a towel to remove excess liquid and lay flat to dry on a fresh towel.
DRYING
Remove and squeeze the excess water out of the garment then roll it up in two towels to remove more liquid.(make sure the colour won’t run out of towels and spoil your cover!) Once this is done remove from towels and place in a dry warm area away from direct sunlight. Place the cover on top of another dry towel flatten out and leave for a day or so to dry. Lanonlising may need to be done 3-5 weeks or when you notice that the wetness is leaking through. (Also check that you may need to increase your inserts) Washing needs to be done if the cover smells when dry other wise you just need to air it between uses. Always wash a new cover if it hasn’t been lanolised.
THE NAPPY IS LEAKING !!!
*If too much detergent is used when washing a residue can build up on the nappy. This will reduce the performance of the fabrics making the nappy less absorbant. Just try using less detergent in the wash and this should fix the problem.
* Wash nappy and liners in hot water to remove any barrier creams which will also repell urine from the inserts.
*A new hemp or bamboo insert may not have had enough washes for the fabric to be really absorbant.
* Make sure that the nappy is put on correctly so that it is firm (not tight) around the legs and waist.
Q: Heavy wetters.
My child is a heavy wetter what do I use at night?
A:
There are several options.
1-A thirsty hemp/cotton insert consisting of several layers. 2-A thirsty bamboo/cotton insert consisting of three layers. 3-An microfibre insert(it will absorb up to 7 times its weight in fluid, this fabric does not go next to babys body as it may dry out the skin) 4- Soobies double woollen boosters that go on top of the nappy between the cover. 5 Woollen covers will breathe and hold more moisture.
Hemp and bamboo will perform best after it has been washed 4-6 times.
ANOTHER OPTION: Is to use 2 nappies at the same time. First put Fitted nappy on - one that fits well at the waist and legs- Then the second slightly bigger nappy goes over the first one. Place a booster between the two nappies so that there is a huge amount of absorbency! A good one would be microfibre and hemp or bamboo. Sleep well.
Q: Nappy Fabrics
What are the uses of all the different nappy fabrics?
A:
PUL (polyurethane laminated) Fabric that has polyurethane heat bonded to the reverse side of the fabric making it waterproof,flexible,soft and suitable for the outer covering of nappies.Cotton/polyester woven cottons and other fabrics can also be laminated.We use mostly 2ml PUL FLANNEL This can be single or double sided(1 or 2 fluffy sides)Any or all of the nappy can be made from flannel.Thicker versions will naturally last longer.
BAMBOO Very absorbent,antibacterial,soft,blended with cotton(80%bamboo/20%cotton) does take a long time to dry.
BAMBOO VELOUR A soft soft soft fabric! It is gentle on the skin.
FLEECE Polyester fleece is a synthetic fleece that can be used for outer covers and inner liners. In particular Malden Mills fleece from USA have several choices well suited for nappies.Windpro and 300 wt (heavy) are great for covers but 200wt can also be used.They have a water repellant treatment on them which makes the fleece breathable but water-resistant so moisture passes through the fleece away from baby.(an added bonus is that the faeces stays on the liner and doesn't stick)
SUEDECLOTH Is thinner than microfleece and can be used instead of microfleece to line a nappy, it tends not to stain. It seems when choosing nappy combinations that personal preference is the deciding factor -some like this product others don't.
WOOL Wool is a great product for covers as it is breathable and it doesn't feel wet even when the nappy is saturated. They don't need constant washing (maybe weekly) but do need hand washing.(you can make covers from old jumpers as long as they are 80%wool)They do need to be lanonlized every now and then.Also anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, this makes a good night time cover.
INTERLOCK Poly cottons or cotton are soft and colourful and the entire nappy canbe made from this fabric.
MICROFIBRE This fabric is very absorbant-it will absorb up to 6 times its weight in moisture,is fast drying and makes a slim concealed layer in a nappy(not to be used next to skin as it will absorb oils and dry skin) It will leak under compression and so is best used with other fabric.It is made from 80%polyester + 20% polyamide.
SEWING To prevent leakage through the stitching always use polyester thread as urine will track through 100 % cotton thread.
Q: Wipes + Solutions
What type of wipes + solution should I use?
A:
WIPES
If you are using a reusable nappy system you may be interested in using reusable wipes. They can be made from flannel, fleece, terry towelling. OPTIONS:20x20cm stitched and turned for added strength. 1 Soft flannel on one side and terry towelling on the other side. 2 Soft velour and bamboo / cotton. They can be tossed in with the nappies for laundry day.
SOLUTIONS The cheapest solution is water and the one less likely to cause rashes. Just wet your wipe with warm water on your way to the change table.
ANTI FUNGAL:(Store in fridge and just poor over wipes so they are damp) 2 drops Lavender oil 1Tablespoon Food grade cooking oil 1 cup water 1 Tablespoon vinegar 1/4cup Aloe Vera gel 2 drops Tea tree oil
BASIC (Pour over wipes and store extra in fridge) 2cups water 2tablespoons food oil 2 Tablespoons shamppoo or body wash
Q: All about menstrual pads.
Washing mentrual pads.
A:
Washing: Where possible soak pad overnight and always use cold water. Use a sealed wet bag for transporting soiled pads. Once stains have been removed put into washing machine on a cold or warm wash using gentle washing powder-you may prefer to hand wash each item.
