Q: For Grannies and those who need some information about cloth nappies
I don't know anything about cloth nappies and fabrics.
A:
This page is for those who find the jargon of the cloth world a little overwhelming.Basically there are so many choices -none the perfect or correct choice- trial an error seem to be the way most people come at their decisions. Factors that may lean you in one direction or another are: *cost *style and ease of application *drying ability *childs output ( heavy wetters may need microfibre/bamboo+/or hemp for soakers for example) *a baby who does runny poos will best better in a contoured fitted nappy *cuteness- there are so many pretty practical and durable fabrics available to tempt you! *environmental-it takes many many years for disposable nappies to disintergrate.
ALL-IN-ONE NAPPY(AIO) A contoured shaped nappy with the waterproof cover and inner lining sewn together.Elastic at the back and legs.May have resisn snaps or touch tape (like velcro) for closures. They do require inserts as this is the absorption component of the nappy. They are compact, cute and the closest thing to a disposable nappy. When well cared for they will still be useable for a second child. They are very popular though they initially cost more than other options.
FITTED NAPPY A nappy that is contoured to fit around the legs with less bulk has elastic at the back and around the legs. (Much like a disposable). It is not water proof and will need a cover over the top. I make them in three sizes. (newborn to toddler )
BOOSTER An extra layer placed inside the nappy for added absorption.A child may have 2 during the day and need 3 at night for greater absosrption depending on the fabric used.(may also be known as an insert/doubler.)
LINER The part of the nappy that is next to the babys skin, commonly a piece of fleece through which the urine will pass and be wicked up into the absorbent inserts(I cut them in an hour glass shape for a better fit .) Moisture is reduced next to babys skin and acts as a barrier to catch the poo, leaving the nappy stain free.
COVER This is the outer layer of the nappy keeping bedding and clothing dry ( may also be known as pilchers or wrap)
PUL Polyurethane laminate. The best product to act as a barrier to make fabric water resistant and able to breathe reducing the risk of nappy rash. This bonding is commonly applied to polyknits + cotton fabric but can be used on most fabrics. It is not available in retail outlets- (vinyl is said to be cheaper but does not breathe , may cause nappy rash and smell after a while)
WICKING The action of water tracking up fabric. FLEECE Malden Mills (USA) produce excellent fleece in various weights are that are perfect for the cloth systems. This can be used to line the inside of the nappy or used as a liner( the loose hour-glass shaped fabric that is place next to the babys skin and moisture passes through it taking urine away from the baby.)
PRE-FOLDS These are rectangular shaped nappies often made from flannel with a thicker layer in the centre for greater absorption. They can be fastened with nappy pins or a Snappi or left unfastened with the cover holding it in place ( this option may not contain runny poo !) They are a cost effective choice for the newborn and can be still used as the baby grows and needs extra boosters. They come in a variety of sizes.
SNAPPI This is a plastic fastener used to fasten nappies that have loops in the fabric (eg terry towelling) This is instead of nappy pins, although they may still be used!
INFORMATION Do browse through the other information section and feel free to email me if you want some help .("contact us" ) On average the cost of using disposable nappies for one child for 2 1/2 years is over $2000.00. To set up a modern cloth nappy system may cost between $600-$800 and if well cared for this will last for at least 2 -3children !!
HAPPY HUNTING
Q: Rollicking Rascal Nappies explained
What are the different types of Rollicking Rascal Nappies?
A:
The Rollicking Rascal Original Nappy This is a one-sized, all-in-one nappy that has been designed to avoid wetness over the baby's hips and is quick to dry. The outer shell is a waterproof layer of poyeurethane laminated fabric(PUL) and the inner layer is either microfleece or polarfleece. There are 23 resin snaps on the outside front of the nappy which enables the nappy to be adapted to one of three sizes.(I am also doing these with touch tape~ like velcro~ if requested) Inside the shell sit 2 contoured absorbent inserts and a liner for keeping the baby's bottom dry. This nappy is suitable for newborn to toddler(see approx weights below)Some prefer to use prefolds on the newborn as some babys are very small and can get swamped in the nappy if below these weights. When ordering the RR Original Nappy you request the size insert required. SMALL = 3kg-6kg(6.6-13.2 lbs)
MEDIUM =5kg-10kg(11-22.04lbs) LARGE =8kg-20kg(17.6-44.09lbs) The Rollicking Rascal Fitted Nappy This is designed as a non-waterproof nappy which requires a waterproof cover. The shape is the same as the RR Original Nappy but it comes in three sizes. The medium and small sizes of the Fitted Nappy correspond to the sizes of the medium and small folds of the RR Original Nappy. It has been designed in three sizes as it was too bulky to be a one -size nappy. When ordering the fitted nappy the corresponding size insert will be included SMALL = 3kg-6kg(6.6-13.2lbs) MEDIUM =5kg-10kg(11-22.04lbs) LARGE =8kg-20kg(17.6-44.09lbs) See Rollicking Rascal Nappies under products for examples of these nappies
Q: Nappy Fabrics
What are the uses of all the different nappy fabrics?
A:
PUL (polyurethane laminated) Fabric that has polyurethane heat bonded to the reverse side of the fabric making it waterproof, flexible, soft and suitable for the outer covering of nappies.Cotton/polyester woven cottons and other fabrics can also be laminated. We use mostly 2ml PUL FLANNEL This can be single or double sided(1 or 2 fluffy sides)Any or all of the nappy can be made from flannel.Thicker versions will naturally last longer.
BAMBOO Very absorbent, antibacterial, soft, blended with cotton(80%bamboo/20%cotton) does take a long time to dry.
VELOUR A soft fabric with a polyester backing and soft cotton top.All of the nappy can be made with this fabric.(very soft next to body)
FLEECE Polyester fleece is a synthetic fleece that can be used for outer covers and inner liners. In particular Malden Mills fleece from USA have several choices well suited for nappies.Windpro and 300 wt (heavy) are great for covers but 200wt can also be used. They have a water repellant treatment on them which makes the fleece breathable but water-resistant so moisture passes through the fleece away from baby.(an added bonus is that the faeces stays on the liner and doesn't stick)
SUEDECLOTH Is thinner than microfleece and can be used instead of microfleece to line a nappy, it tends not to stain. It seems when choosing nappy combinations that personal preference is the deciding factor -some like this product others don't.
WOOL Wool is a great product for covers as it is breathable and it doesn't feel wet even when the nappy is saturated. They don't need constant washing (maybe weekly) but do need hand washing.(you can make covers from old jumpers as long as they are 80%wool)They do need to be lanonlized every now and then. Also anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, this makes a good night time cover.
INTERLOCK Poly cottons or cotton are soft and colourful and the entire nappy canbe made from this fabric.
MICROFIBRE This fabric is very absorbant-it will absorb up to 6 times its weight in moisture,is fast drying and makes a slim concealed layer in a nappy(not to be used next to skin as it will absorb oils and dry skin) It will leak under compression and so is best used with other fabric. It is made from 80%polyester + 20% polyamide.
SEWING To prevent leakage through the stitching always use polyester thread as urine will track through 100 % cotton thread.
Q: Sizing
How do I know which size nappy to purchase?
A:
Babies + toddlers who are petite would be best suited to the smaller sized fitted nappies. Where as more solid children will be best suited to the larger sizes.Rollicking Rascal nappies are a trim fit nappy. Remember to also measure the rise (that is the measurement from back waist of nappy, through legs to front waist) as well as noting the childs weight. Try our Introduction Pack(a collection of all our products at a reduced rate)before purchasing a whole nappy stash to make sure they suit your baby. Please try them on over a face cloth or liner and if they need to be returned, I'm sorry, I can't cover the return postage cost. ROLLICKING RASCALS FITTED NAPPIES small = 3kg-6kgs rise=36cm(14") medium= 5kg-10kgs rise=41cm(16")approx size 1 large= 8kgs-20kgs rise=46cm(18`) approx size 2 ROLLICKING RASCALS AIO fit newborn to toddler 3kg-20kgs rise =46cm(18") PRE-FOLDS measurements=41cm(16")x31cm(12.5")
Q: How many nappies should I purchase?
How many nappies do I need to have in my supply?
A:
This depends on the age of the baby, climate and how often you want to wash. All-in-One nappies Fitted nappies and pre folds are the nappies I make.
(Pre folds are the cheapest and best suited to the newborn or smaller baby) If you choose the AIO system you may be able to use the cover a couple of times before they need washing and just change the inserts and liner.
SO HOW MANY ?
Newborn babies need 12 or more nappies a day, older babies may use 5-8 per day. A minimum of 24 nappies, washing every second day would work well but this would leave no extras, if for some reason you didn’t get to wash every second day.
A part time cloth nappy user would need about, 12 nappies washing every second day.
STARTING OUT 12 prefold nappies + 2 Snappi fasteners 6 fitted nappies 4-6 nappy fleece covers or wool wraps 6 All-in-One Nappies with inserts
CHEAPEST FOR NEWBORNS 24 prefold nappies 4-6 covers or wraps 2 Snappi fasteners
SIMPLE SET UP 12 AIO’s with inserts 12 prefolds 4-6 covers 2 Snappi fasteners
PUL covers are really good for day time wear, they are cute durable and easy to use.Because this fabric breathes the risk of odour is less and baby will remain drier and cool. They may have snaps or touch tape closures.
FLEECE covers are a soft alternative to a cover though if using for extended car travel they can be prone to wicking if not changed regularly.
The Introduction Package that I offer gives you a selection of all these products at a cheaper rate than buying individually.
Accessories to get you started in cloth:
12-25 cloth wipes 6-12 nappy inserts for added thickness at night A wet bag or bucket with a lid for dirty washing to be collected.
Nappy leakage:
A-Prewash new nappies to remove any plant oils or manufacturing oils. B-A build up of oils that you may be applying to baby’s skin or detergent build up from washing can repel urine and cause leaking.(Fix this by washing in hot water with no soap and rinsing until nappy is suds free) C-Change baby regularly (newborns may need hourly at first) and always change if bowels have been used. Meconium (newborn bowel action) is sticky and you may want to use a liner so that your nappy doesn’t get stained-it is hard to sun bleach out. -Older children who are heavy wetters may benefit from an extra knitted booster to go on the outside of the nappy and under the cover for night time use. This can be re-lanolised. D-If using an AIO check that you haven’t stuffed the shell too full of inserts and stretched fabric so that the stitching has torn the PUL fabric.(If this is the case a burst in the dryer may help to fuse the PUL together again-be careful that you don’t over do it and ruin the shell all together!) --Check that waist/leg elastic is still giving you a firm fit. E- Woollen covers need to be regularly lanonised to remain in top working order.
Q: Washing Instructions for Nappies
How do I wash my Rollicking Rascal Nappies?
A:
PLEASE WASH NAPPIES BEFORE USE
Dry Pailing Technique:
Remove any poo and flush it down the toilet (usually very easy with polar fleece liners). Place the dirty nappy into a nappy bin or bucket with lid. (No liquid in the bucket)After cleaning the bucket sprinkle some baking soda or a drop of essential oil in the bottom to freshen it or a Citrus Circle Disc can be useful with odour control -just pop one into your bucket and then add the soiled nappies into it. When ready to wash, place the nappies in the washing machine ( minus the citrus circle) Wash the nappies with hot water (55 degrees is hot enough) add ordinary detergent.(Some people put them through a rinse cycle first. )
If you soak your Rollicking Rascals nappies in nappy soaker products please be aware that they may fade slightly and may not last as long as if they were drypailed. IMPORTANT: Please do not wash Rollicking Rascals nappies with other items containing unprotected Velcro/touch tape/hook and loop as the soft thread used on the edges of the nappies may become damaged.(If using Rollicking Rascals nappies that have touch tape, please use laundry tab and fold right hand wing onto front flap before washing)
Please limit the use of vinegar ( some use this as an odour controlling method)in your rinse as it is known to break down PUL fabric with continued use. Do not use fabric softener in the wash as it will coat the nappies in oils, decreasing their absorbency. Do not dry clean. We strongly recommend you allow the covers and liners of your Rollicking Rascals nappies to air dry, rather than place them in a tumble drier. The inserts and cover dry extremely quickly, even in cold/damp climates. The inserts may be placed in a drier but a small amount of shrinkage will occur if placed on a high heat setting for extended periods. We recommend using a low heat setting on your drier. If you find you must use a drier for the covers, please use only the lowest heat setting on your drier for very short periods of time.
Q: Solutions
What solutions can I use with the cloth wipes?
A:
The cheapest solution is water and the one less likely to cause rashes. Just wet your wipe with warm water on your way to the change table.
ANTI FUNGAL:(Store in fridge and just poor over wipes so they are damp) 2 drops Lavender oil 1Tablespoon Food grade cooking oil 1 cup water 1 Tablespoon vinegar 1/4cup Aloe Vera gel 2 drops Tea tree oil
BASIC (Pour over wipes and store extra in fridge) 2cups water 2tablespoons food oil 2 Tablespoons shamppoo or body wash
Q: Wipes
What type of wipes should I use?
A:
If you are using a reusable nappy system you may be interested in using reusable wipes. They are made from flannel, fleece, terry towelling. One combination I make is soft flannel on one side and terry towelling on the other side. They can be tossed in with the nappies for laundry day.
Q: Heavy wetters.
My child is a heavy wetter what do I use at night?
A:
There are several options. 1-A thirsty hemp/cotton insert consisting of several layers. 2-A thirsty bamboo/cotton insert consisting of three layers. 3-An microfibre insert(it will absorb up to 7 times its weight in fluid, this fabric does not go next to babys body as it may dry out the skin) 4- Soobies double woollen boosters that go on top of the nappy between the cover. 5 Woollen covers will breathe and hold more moisture.
Hemp and bamboo will perform best after it has been washed 4-6 times.
ANOTHER OPTION: Is to use 2 nappies at the same time. First put Fitted nappy on - one that fits well at the waist and legs- Then the second slightly bigger nappy goes over the first one. Place a booster between the two nappies so that there is a huge amount of absorbency! A good one would be microfibre and hemp or bamboo. Sleep well.
Q: Leaking
The nappy is leaking and not holding the urine.
A:
*If too much detergent is used when washing a residue can build up on the nappy. This will reduce the performance of the fabrics making the nappy less absorbant. Just try using less detergent in the wash and this should fix the problem.
* Wash nappy and liners in hot water to remove any barrier creams which will also repell urine from the inserts.
*A new hemp or bamboo insert may not have had enough washes for the fabric to be really absorbant.
* Make sure that the nappy is put on correctly so that it is firm (not tight) around the legs and waist.
Q: Returns
What if I want to return items?
A:
* Please contact us via e-mail before sending anything back.We recommend that return items are sent by registered mail as we cannot be responsible for items lost on their way back to us. Items must be unwashed, unworn (other than tried on) and uncut.
They need to be in a re-saleable condition and that includes all the packaging and accessories that were supplied at time of purchase. (Incomplete returns will not be refunded)
Q: Payment +Postage
What are the shipping arrangements? How do I pay?
A:
Australian customers spend $50 or more and receive FREE regualar postage.(There will be a charge for registered post) Postage to Australian addresses is calculated automatically during checkout based on the weight of your order. All items are sent by Australia Post. Were possible I will combine postage.
For orders outside Australia: Please contact us for a shipping quote prior to purchasing. Pay Pal is the preferred payment at Soobies. But we also offer direct deposit. On your checkout invoice our banking details will be given to you.
Q: Covers
What types of covers are available?
A:
PUL: Pul covers are great for day time, trim and cute patterns .Breathable so that air can circulate through the tiny holes and moisture is able to evaporate this helps to keep baby more comfortable and reduces nappy rash. (The old plastic pants are cheaper but they are hot and baby tends to sweat which doesn't help with urine on the delicate skin) 4 PUL covers ( avail in small medium and large) would work well for 24 hours. A newborn may need up to 6 /day.
FLEECE: These covers are bulkier than PUl covers. Compression wicking can occur if inferior fleece is used. Malden Mills windpro or microfleece work well for covers day or night.
WOOL: This is a natural product and absorbent. Many parents choose this product for their babies the wear at night.
Wool
Q: Washing woollen products
How do I lanolise and wash woollen covers and longies?
A:
Care of woollen covers. To remove faeces from your woollen cover gently wash it with water and olive oil soap.(Don’t use commercial wool detergents as it will prevent lanolin from working when you attempt to lanolise your cover) To get a good coating of lanolin the process may have to be done several times before the garment is ready for wear.(A way to test if it’s done enough is to drop some water onto the cover and if it rolls off it has enough lanolin on it to use) Wool is the absorbent and the lanolin makes it water proof. TO LANOLISE: Melt about 1cm of Lansinoh Lanolin in hot water then add ½ a capful of Eucalan Woolwash to the hot water mix, slosh it around to break up the clump of lanolin. Fill a container with tepid water (skin temperature) Submerge the wool cover into the mix and soak for 15-20 minutes. Turn the cover or longies inside out and soak for another 15 minutes. If you have blobs of lanolin on the garment it won’t matter and if it is really sticky that’s ok too.
OR
After washing item to be lanolised turn it inside out and put in a bowl or sink. Put about a cup full of reallly hot water into an airtight container (screw lid is safer) and add 1/2 teaspoon of Lansinoh Lanolin, shake until it is melted. Let the mixture cool and then add enough baby shampoo to it so that it turns white. This mixture can then be poured onto the area to be lanolised and left to soak in for 1/2 hour or so. Gently rinse item roll in a towel to remove excess liquid and lay flat to dry on a fresh towel.
DRYING Remove and squeeze the excess water out of the garment then roll it up in two towels to remove more liquid.(make sure the colour won’t run out of towels and spoil your cover!) Once this is done remove from towels and place in a dry warm area away from direct sunlight. Place the cover on top of another dry towel flatten out and leave for a day or so to dry. Lanonlising may need to be done 3-5 weeks or when you notice that the wetness is leaking through. (Also check that you may need to increase your inserts) Washing needs to be done if the cover smells when dry other wise you just need to air it between uses. Always wash a new cover if it hasn’t been lanolised . HOW TO WASH A WOOL COVER. Olive oil soap can be used on covers using tepid water .If the water is too hot or too cold may shrink the wool and rubbing it vigorously may felt it.see above for drying cover.
